WINDOWS 11 SUPPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The Windows 11 upgrade has begun being delivered to qualifying devices late 2021 into 2022. Timing will vary by device, but in general it is possible that end users may see requests from Microsoft to “Upgrade.”

River Run recommends not upgrading at this time. The operating system has only been out in the mainstream since Q4 of 2021, and many software companies are figuring out the best way to support the new platform. This may require, in some cases, re-architecture of their software, which can take months to complete. The implication to the end client is that the software platforms (ERP, CRM, CAD, Design, Medical, Financial, etc.) used to run their businesses may no longer work post upgrade.

River Run believes it is prudent to let the vendor software development cycle run two quarters and allow for Windows to release a feature update, generally the first major update that fixes many bugs.

Windows 10 is still in full support from Microsoft and will receive all security updates until end of support, no sooner than 2025.

If a client is anxious to test this new operating system in their environment, it would be River Run's recommendation to have the client produce a non-production machine, isolated from the corporate network and configured with similar client-specific software to be used for testing. Also, as a reminder, installation of any Windows 11 operating system falls outside any R-Managed Agreements and will be treated such from a billing standpoint.

River Run's Senior Technical team will continue to monitor the progress of Windows 11 updates and major software platforms to ensure that when we do recommend cut over, we are ready.
