2021 REPORT OF 1,100 IT & OT SECURITY PROFESSIONALS HAD 80% OF COMPANIES BEING HIT BY RANSOMWARE AND 60% MAKING A PAYMENT. YEESH!

This was a real eye opener!

Claroty’s 2021 Global State of Industrial Cybersecurity report conducted in September is based on a survey of 1,100 OT and IT security professionals in the US, Europe, and the Asian Pacific nations. More than half of respondents work for entities that have an annual revenue exceeding $1 billion.

Ransomware attacks hit industrial control systems (ICS) or operational technology (OT) environments with significant impact.

Approximately 80% of those surveyed reported that their organization had experienced a ransomware attack within the past year, and about half said the event impacted their ICS or OT environment.

Half of those impacted organizations rated the incident as significant with 7% experiencing a shut down that lasted over a week. Only 15% reported zero or minimal impact.

22% of those experiencing shutdowns said their per hour loss was over $1M.

Of even greater concern than the productivity loss was over 60% reporting that they did make a ransomware payment. Of those who made payments, approximately 20% paid over $1 million dollars. This included 7% that paid over $5 million.

Just doing the math of the surveyed companies, 660 made ransomware payments. If you flipped a coin, you had a better chance of making a payment than not.

On the human capital side, approximately 40% reported that they need to fill critical positions in industrial cybersecurity. This is not just a technology issue, but a lack of human resources.
