With over half of all cell phone users using a smartphone, they have never been more prevalent.   If your smartphone gets into the wrong hands it can cause you a world of trouble with the amount of information the device holds.  Between your apps,  contacts, messages, address book and pictures your phone can give away a lot of valuable information.  There are many precautions you can take to protect yourself if your smartphone is lost or stolen that will make obtaining your information more difficult.  Below are some very basic steps to keeping your smartphone safe.

Keep it locked-  Using a password is the most simple way to protect your phone, and yet it is not always done.  If you are not using a password  to protect your phone, take out your phone right now and set one.  Some phones allow you to set either a four digit pin or an eight digit alphanumeric passcode,  the latter is more secure.

Save your model number-   Keep the model number of your phone in a secure location.  If your phone is stolen having these numbers will be very beneficial to report to the police and your carrier.

Update Phone Operating System-  When smartphone’s ask you to update your operating system you should do so right away.  These updates will almost always include patches for security flaws.

Location tracking APP-  If you have a tracking it will make finding your lost or stolen phone much easier.  The only flaw with this is that some thieves know to turn off the phone immediately so it cannot be tracked.  Most devices offer free tracking applications such as Find My iPhone, or Where’s My Droid.

Remote wiping app-  Download an APP that will allow you to sign in somewhere else to remotely lock your phone.  If your phone is stolen and is unlocked you may be risking giving away a lot of critical information.  Setting up a remote wiping APP will allow you to protect against that so worst case scenario is that you will have lost your phone, but not given away confidential information.

These are just some of the precautions you can take to protect your phone, if you are interested in learning more please contact us for some additional strategies.
